Synopsis

Deep in the mountains, far from human society, a noble family known as the Shadows lives within an enormous manor. Their bodies are pitch-black, and when their emotions flare they release soot. As each Shadow child nears adulthood, they are given a “Living Doll” to serve as an attendant and public face—an other half meant to represent the visage the Shadow can never show.

Emilico, a bright and newly made Doll, is assigned to the quiet Kate. While their temperaments don’t always match, Emilico works earnestly to meet her master’s needs. Through her duties, she encounters other Dolls and their Shadow masters, gradually piecing together what her role truly entails—and why the household’s strict rules insist she ignore “trivial matters,” even as the manor’s mysteries grow harder to overlook.
