A year after a UFO carrying 150 extraterrestrials crashes off the coast of Kasai, Japan grants the stranded newcomers citizenship under the label “DearS,” schooling them in the country’s language and customs. To help them adapt to everyday life, a homestay program places DearS in human households, setting the stage for awkward misunderstandings and unexpected connections.

On a foggy morning, a truck accident leaves one DearS capsule on a riverbank, where high schooler Takeya Ikuhara discovers the girl inside. Though he’s deeply wary of the DearS and wants no involvement with them, he can’t ignore someone in danger—rescuing her from an oncoming vehicle and taking her in.
