Synopsis

In the crime-ridden city of Ergastalum, mercenaries Nicholas Brown and Worick Arcangelo operate as the “Handymen,” taking on the jobs nobody else will touch. Hired by both mob syndicates and the police, they move wherever the money and danger lead. After carrying out a contract to kill a local pimp, they take in Alex Benedetto—a prostitute who was also marked for death—bringing her under their protection as enemies close in on the place she reluctantly calls home.

Ergastalum’s uneasy order begins to fracture as the city turns on the “Twilights,” enhanced humans born from a special drug who were once allowed to exist there. With a ruthless underground group hunting them down and power shifting across the underworld, the Handymen find themselves caught in a mounting conflict that threatens to upend everything Ergastalum has been built on.

Otaku Consensus

Gangsta. earns its cult affection through a sharply directed early stretch, an adult crime-anime texture, and the charged chemistry between Worick, Nicolas, and Alex. The verdict is limited by a widely cited production problem: weak and inconsistent animation, plus an adaptation that stops on an unresolved cliffhanger and increasingly trades underworld intrigue for less satisfying action beats.

Why You Should Watch

Watch Gangsta. if you want an action drama about damaged adults, underworld labor, and dirty alliances without school-life padding or tournament-arc escalation. It scratches part of the Black Lagoon itch, but with less swaggering comedy and more emphasis on exhaustion, disability, exploitation, and social hierarchy; it also has the grimy appeal that fans often seek in crime-heavy anime like Gungrave. The draw is not a perfectly closed story, because the anime does not provide one. The draw is the texture: Manglobe’s 2015 adaptation gives you a compact, hard-edged introduction to Ergastalum, a memorable central trio, and enough unfinished tension that many viewers have treated it as the gateway to the manga rather than the final version of the story.

Key Characters

  • W
    Worick Arcangelo(VA: Junichi Suwabe)

Worick is remembered for the contrast between his relaxed, seductive front and the colder survival instincts that make him feel like a professional product of Ergastalum rather than a conventional action lead.

  • A
    Alex Benedetto(VA: Mamiko Noto)

Alex gives the series its most vulnerable perspective, with Mamiko Noto’s restrained performance emphasizing trauma and wary self-possession instead of turning her into a simple damsel figure.

  • N
    Nicolas Brown(VA: Kenjirou Tsuda)

Nicolas stands out as a deaf combatant whose presence changes the rhythm of scenes, with Kenjirou Tsuda’s gravelly, limited vocal performance making him instantly recognizable.

What Makes It Stand Out

  • 1

Gangsta. was produced by Manglobe and aired as a 12-episode TV anime from July to September 2015, giving it the compact, incomplete shape of a first-act adaptation rather than a self-contained crime saga.

  • 2

Its central cast is explicitly adult, which is a major reason positive viewer reactions singled it out from school-age action anime; the appeal is workplace danger, debts, trauma, and criminal politics rather than coming-of-age progression.

  • 3

The anime’s reputation is inseparable from its cliffhanger ending: Rice Digital still recommended it because the unresolved finish pushed viewers toward the manga, while detractors treated that same lack of closure as the fatal flaw.

  • 4

Critical complaints often target the mid-series genre drift: Funcurve noted that the show begins closer to crime drama with action, then becomes more of an action show with crime drama sprinkled in.

  • 5

The MAL data reflects broad reach more than universal acclaim: a 7.42 score from 299,179 votes and a popularity position around #400 sit alongside a much lower rank of #2548, matching the sharply divided user reviews.

Fun Facts & Trivia

Fun fact 1
Gangsta. is one of the notable late-era Manglobe productions; the studio’s financial collapse in 2015 is a major reason fans do not expect a second season from the same production line.
Fun fact 2
The show’s public reception has remained unusually polarized: the provided MAL user reviews range from 3/10 and 4/10 condemnations to a 10/10 defense that argues the only major downside is the lack of a real ending.
Fun fact 3
Several reviewers pushed back against comparisons to Black Lagoon, arguing that Gangsta. is less of a high-energy pulp shootout series and more of a grim urban crime setup that never fully resolves its larger conflict.
Fun fact 4
Anime-Planet criticism singled out weak animation, repetitive or inconclusive action scenes, and an underused setting, while IMDb-style user impressions were milder, calling it solid for viewers seeking action and a decent character set.
Fun fact 5
The Japanese main trio features three highly recognizable voice actors: Junichi Suwabe as Worick, Mamiko Noto as Alex, and Kenjirou Tsuda as Nicolas.
