Requiem from the Darkness

Hoping to revive his failing career, struggling writer Momosuke Yamaoka sets out across Edo-period Japan to collect one hundred ghost tales. His search leads him into remote mountains, where he meets a monk named Mataichi. Ignoring Mataichi’s warning to turn back, Momosuke continues on—only to witness a killing carried out by the monk and two companions.

Mataichi’s group is more than a band of outlaws: they involve themselves in strange, otherworldly cases, delivering harsh judgment to those deemed guilty. As Momosuke keeps chasing material for his anthology, he repeatedly runs into the trio and is drawn deeper into their work, forced to confront the ethics of their “justice” and the uneasy boundary between human wrongdoing and the supernatural.
