Daigo Shigeno grows up in the shadow of his father Gorou, a celebrated baseball player, and feels expected to become a star himself. When he reaches fourth grade, he joins Gorou’s former little league team, the Mifune Dolphins, full of ambition—but early practices expose his lack of natural aptitude and instincts for the sport. With his confidence shaken and the pressure becoming too much, Daigo leaves the team before a year has passed.

By sixth grade, Daigo’s routine is disrupted by a new transfer student: Hikaru, the son of Gorou’s longtime friend and fellow baseball standout, Toshiya Satou. After the Dolphins call asking for players for a game, Daigo’s mother pushes him to show up, where he unexpectedly runs into Hikaru—and learns that Hikaru has never played baseball despite his family background. Yet Hikaru takes to the game immediately, setting up a sharp contrast with Daigo that draws both boys back toward the baseball world their fathers hold dear.
