Kei Narutani and his childhood friend Song Minghua, refugees from China, flee the chaos wrought by the Zai—an enigmatic force that attacks without warning. On their perilous route to Japan, they survive thanks to the intervention of an unusual red aircraft, an encounter that leaves Kei unable to forget what he saw.

His curiosity soon leads him to Gripen, an “Anima” bonded to a one-of-a-kind fighter known as a “Daughter.” Drawn into her world, Kei forms a connection with Gripen and is brought into the Japan Self-Defense Force to support her as she struggles with flying. As Eagle and Phantom join their unit, the team prepares to face the Zai head-on, standing as a crucial line of defense against the encroaching threat.
