Synopsis

In **Karas**, the human world and the realm of youkai have begun to overlap, sharing the same city streets—humans unaware, demons moving unseen. Maintaining the fragile equilibrium is **Yurine** and her enforcer, a crow-themed guardian known as a **Karas**, whose duty is to keep youkai from disrupting everyday life. As people dismiss demons as superstition, a former Karas grows contemptuous of humanity’s complacency and abandons the code he once protected. Taking the human name **Eko**, he builds an army of **Mikura**, mechanized demons, and prepares to turn them against mankind.

A young man named **Otoha** inherits the Karas power and is brought to Yurine’s side, with Yurine insisting his soul called out to her while he lived as a human. Now living among the youkai, Otoha must prove himself worthy of the mantle and stop Eko from shattering the balance. On the human side, superstitious detective **Sagisaka** and his level-headed new partner **Kure** investigate a string of killings tied to the Mikura, along with the movements of a rogue Mikura called **Nue**, as unfolding events point toward a grim revelation for the city.

Otaku Consensus

Karas earns its cult reputation through Keiichi Satou's maximalist direction, Tatsunoko Production's 2D/CG combat staging, and Kenji Hayama's hard-edged designs; fans remember it as a mid-2000s showpiece for sword clashes, explosions, lasers, robotics, and monster transformation more than as a dialogue-forward drama. Its weakness is just as consistent: the six-episode OVA format compresses mythology and character motivation into dense bursts, leaving reviews to praise the grit and action while calling the story and dialogue corny. That split is reflected in its respectable-but-niche database footprint: 7.37 on MAL, 68/100 on AniList, MAL popularity #3104, and only 90 AniList favourites.

Why You Should Watch

Watch Karas if you want tokusatsu grammar — henshin ritual, armored guardian iconography, monsters as suit-actor archetypes — filtered through violent urban-fantasy OVA excess. It is for viewers who value choreography, creature silhouettes, and audiovisual impact over tidy exposition: the pleasure is seeing a Tatsunoko production hurl hand-drawn characters, CGI machinery, crows, blades, and neon city haze into the same frame. It scratches a bit of the Hellsing Ultimate itch for grim supernatural combat and the Demon Slayer itch for demon-facing spectacle, but without comedy beats, tournament buildup, or long-form shounen reassurance. At six episodes, it works best as a concentrated midnight-screening object: jagged, ornate, and designed to make transformation and impact frames feel ceremonial.

Key Characters

  • N
    Nue(VA: Keiji Fujiwara)

Nue is the OVA's noir wildcard, and Keiji Fujiwara's performance gives him the gravelly, wounded-cool presence fans tend to remember after the spectacle fades.

  • Y
    Yousuke Otoha(VA: Soukou Wada)

Yousuke Otoha stands out as a henshin lead defined less by quips or training-arc earnestness than by raw physicality and the burdened silence around the Karas mantle.

  • Y
    Yurine(VA: Kasumi Suzuki)

Yurine functions like a ritual figure rather than a conventional mentor, giving the series much of its eerie, mythic poise amid the mechanical violence.

What Makes It Stand Out

  • 1

Tatsunoko Production's animation approach is built around hybrid spectacle: traditional character animation collides with CGI-heavy machinery, transformations, and city-scale action, matching AniList's notable CGI tag at 52%.

  • 2

Keiichi Satou is credited as both original creator and director, giving Karas a stronger authorial stamp than a routine franchise adaptation or committee-built tie-in.

  • 3

Kenji Hayama handled character design and also served as chief animation director alongside Akira Takata, which helps explain why the sharp silhouettes and armored forms are as central to the appeal as the fights themselves.

  • 4

Yoshihiro Ike's music, paired with Jin Aketagawa's sound direction, pushes the OVA toward operatic urban fantasy rather than standard monster-of-the-week action.

  • 5

Its genre identity is unusually specific: AniList users tag it most strongly as Tokusatsu at 82%, Henshin at 74%, and Youkai at 73%, placing it closer to a dark transformed-hero tradition than to generic demon fantasy.

Fun Facts & Trivia

Fun fact 1
Karas is an original anime work rather than a manga or game adaptation, with Keiichi Satou credited as the original creator as well as the director.
Fun fact 2
The release cadence was unusually stretched: only six episodes aired across more than two years, from March 25, 2005 to August 3, 2007.
Fun fact 3
English-language reviews often discuss the project through the titles Karas: The Prophecy and Karas: The Revelation, reflecting its two-part home-video identity more than a standard TV-season structure.
Fun fact 4
Its reputation as a visual showcase was strong enough that later fan discussion recalled hearing it described in 2007 as one of the best-animated anime productions of its moment.
Fun fact 5
Despite nearly 28,968 MAL votes and a solid 7.37 score, its MAL popularity rank of #3104 and AniList favourites count of 90 mark it as a cult-action title rather than a mainstream database staple.
