Set against the backdrop of 1955 in Kokuga, Hofu City, Yamaguchi Prefecture, the story invites viewers into a world where history and imagination intertwine. Once the site of the ancient capital Suo no Kuni, this charming town is rich with remnants from the Heian Period, echoing tales from a thousand years past.

The narrative centers on Shinko, a spirited third grader with a distinctive curl on her forehead that she affectionately refers to as her "Mai Mai." With a heart full of curiosity and a penchant for exploring the countryside, Shinko often escapes into daydreams of the past, envisioning the vibrant life of the Heian era. Her world takes a new turn when Kiiko, a girl from Tokyo, joins her class. Initially struggling to adjust to the slower pace of small-town life, Kiiko’s bond with Shinko blossomed, leading them both on an unexpected adventure that connects them to the mysteries of their town’s ancient history.
