Synopsis

In the Alzano Empire, the prestigious Alzano Imperial Magic Academy trains aspiring magicians in both theory and practice. Among its students are the serious noblewoman Sistine Fibel and her upbeat best friend, Rumia Tingel, each determined to refine their spellcraft and prove themselves.

Their routine is upended when a beloved instructor abruptly retires and the seemingly unmotivated Glenn Radars is assigned as the replacement. Glenn’s careless demeanor and unconventional approach immediately clash with his class, but trouble runs deeper than classroom disputes: shadowy forces within the empire begin to stir, drawing Sistine, Rumia, and their new teacher into a growing conspiracy. As Sistine’s fascination with a mysterious floating Sky Castle and Rumia’s lingering past come to the surface, Glenn’s true capabilities hint that he may not be as simple as he appears.

Otaku Consensus

Akashic Records of Bastard Magic Instructor lands as a crowd-pleasing magic-school action fantasy with stronger fan affection than critical unanimity: its quick reveal pacing, Glenn-centered teacher-class friction, and compact conspiracy beats explain why it remains highly visible at MAL Popularity #280 despite a mid-tier 7.1 score and AniList’s 68/100. The common criticism is not lack of energy but lack of identity, with detractors calling it caught between comedy, fantasy, and action while leaving parts of its larger mythology and Glenn’s history underdeveloped.

Why You Should Watch

Watch this if you want a magic-academy series that values classroom mechanics and instructor charisma over endless tournament ladders. It scratches a similar itch to The Irregular at Magic High School’s interest in spell theory, but swaps the ultra-composed genius lead for a more abrasive, anti-hero teacher figure whose methods keep the class dynamic unstable. At 12 episodes, it is a fast binge rather than a lore marathon, with enough twists to reward viewers who like their school fantasy to turn conspiratorial without becoming grimdark. It is especially suited to fans who enjoy mentor-student tension, tsundere class chemistry, and a primarily female cast without wanting the whole show to collapse into pure harem routine.

Key Characters

  • G
    Glenn Radars

Fans tend to remember Glenn less as a standard overpowered teacher and more as a deliberately messy anti-hero whose classroom persona is part comedy weapon, part competence test.

  • S
    Sistine Fibel

Sistine gives the series its sharpest student-side friction, functioning as the disciplined tsundere counterweight to Glenn’s chaotic teaching style.

  • R
    Rumia Tingel

Rumia is often cited as the emotional soft spot of the cast, balancing the academy’s competitive atmosphere with a warmer presence tied to the show’s mystery threads.

What Makes It Stand Out

  • 1

LIDENFILMS produced the anime as a single-cour 12-episode run airing from April 4 to June 20, 2017, which gives it a brisk adaptation rhythm rather than a slow-burn school calendar structure.

  • 2

Touko Machida handled series composition, and the finished show reflects that compression: viewers get frequent tonal turns and plot movement, while the most repeated complaint is that the larger backstory needed more room.

  • 3

The music is by Hiroaki Tsutsumi, giving the series a composer credit associated directly with its balance of academy comedy, action cues, and fantasy suspense rather than relying only on visual spectacle.

  • 4

The theme-song package is unusually character-adjacent: Konomi Suzuki performs the opening, while Yume Miyamoto, Akane Fujita, and Ari Ozawa are credited for the ending performance.

  • 5

Its reception footprint is bigger than its score suggests: MAL lists it at 7.1 from more than 460,000 votes and Popularity #280, while AniList records 3,360 favourites.
